Thunder History

The West Virginia Thunder AAU Basketball Organization was formed in 1991. The Thunder Club is based out of Huntington, West Virginia and provides the opportunity for young women from Southeastern Ohio, Southern West Virginia, and Eastern Kentucky to develop and improve in their athletic and academic skills levels as they advance through the program.  We believe by practicing and competing in basketball, the players will improve in their skills as well as in their personal development.  Our goal is to work with young women athletes beginning at the age of 9 and follow them in each age group until they complete their senior year of high school ball.  The Thunder currently has teams competing in the 12u and 15u age division.  We also have an 8u, 9u, 10u, 11u and 13u who is a branch of the Thunder Program.

The Thunder’s ultimate goal is to give exposure to the young ladies in the Tri-state area (OH/ KY/WV).  By traveling and competing against the best players in the US and exposure to the collegiate coaches the girls who stay in the program have a legitimate chance of playing at the next level.

Since 1991 the WV Thunder has won 30 straight WV State AAU Championships.  The Thunder has lost only three games in those 16 seasons in the state competition.  The team has also placed in the top sixteen teams at the AAU Nationals sixteen times.

There are ten (10) different schools represented on the 12u team and eight different schools represented on the 15u team.  We work toward preparing the young ladies to be the best they can be and encourage them to remain at their local schools.  We know through loyalty and commitment they will make a difference to the community schools.

“It may be difficult but it can be done,” all of our players work toward this old quote and in the end they do get it done.
